Common Questions

Everything families want to know before taking the next step.

About the School What sets GMCS apart
What makes GMCS different from other schools?
A curriculum isn’t the subjects we study or the textbooks we read — it’s the whole childhood experience. We don’t subject ourselves to rigid schedules, standardized testing, or the bureaucratic demands present in many school systems. Our students feel safe and welcome to bring their passions and hopes, their victories and failures, their stories, and their treasures.
Who is GMCS right for?
Families choose GMCS because they trust their child will learn in an environment that is both challenging and encouraging — surrounded by others who are just as enthusiastic about learning. Our motivated learners thrive in small class settings where they receive personalized attention, feel supported by peers, and are consistently challenged. Learning here stays challenging, fun, and rewarding.
What makes GMCS different from public school?
No rigid schedules. No standardized testing. No screens. Students have the freedom to engage socially, take risks, and learn in a supportive environment — inside the classroom and out.
Is GMCS accredited and state-approved?
Yes. GMCS is a federally approved 501(c)(3) nonprofit, officially recognized by the State of Vermont, and meets or exceeds all school licensing standards.
Academics & Daily Life How learning works at GMCS
Do students follow standard academic curriculum?
Yes — and then some. Throughout the year, students complete three projects that deepen their understanding of grade-level academic standards. PBL teaches students to apply core skills — reading, writing, math, historical perspectives, and scientific questions — to the world around them. We synthesize academics with real-life experience to bring relevance and meaning.
How is student progress assessed?
With fewer than a dozen students per class, our teachers track learning and achievement, check for understanding routinely, and give one-to-one attention. Students in third grade and above lead their own conferences at the end of each project — sharing goals, reflecting on progress, and reviewing their work. It teaches ownership of learning and an honest look at their own strengths and challenges.
What does a typical day look like?
No two days are the same. Early school years are when children are most open to taking risks and discovering their world, so we expose them to the full range: theater, art, woodworking, yoga and meditation, creative movement, hiking and biking, music, outdoor experiential learning, and ski and skate. The goal is for every child to discover their gifts, draw out their strengths, and build their capacity for lifelong learning.
Is there homework?
For older students, teachers work with each child and their family to determine what feels appropriate and manageable. It’s tailored to meet each student where they are.
How much screen time do children get?
Screens are not part of our curriculum or daily routine. Older students use computers for typing and research within specific academic projects, with teacher support. That’s it.
